ART AS ACTIVISM
In the summer of 2016, during nationwide protests in response to various social issues, youth at Big Thought decided they wanted to be a part of the change. These young changemakers created Artivism, one of the most unique programs in Big Thought’s history, designed to use art and activism to activate social equity.
Youth-CREATED, LED, AND CENTERED
Youth advocate for change through the collaboration and exchange of points of view, lessons, skills building and supportive feedback with other participants as they are championed to become creators of tomorrow.
Local artists connect with youth and encourage their expression through original artwork, poetry, and performance works designed to inspire action. Annual student-led showcases focus on personal storytelling through the lens of individual experiences and across a variety of media types including painting, spoken word, sculpture, photography, videography and digital arts.
Artivism students participate in more than 1,000 learning hours annually, with 80% of participants reporting an increase in confidence and willingness to take on new challenges and express personal ideas and feelings.
INSPIRED BY MICHAEL SALDAÑA
Michael Saldaña Templin was a Dallas native and had a deep passion for music and film. He simply loved all things creative. Highly inquisitive about many things, Michael used his creative talent and interests to compose music and produce films.
In celebration of Michael’s life, his mother and father, Sarah Saldaña and Don Templin, have established a Memorial Fund in his name. The Michael Saldaña Templin Memorial Fund will support other talented youth in the pursuit of their passions.
