Big Thought Featured: Creative Solutions Rewriting Futures for Justice-Involved Youth
Written by: Charlotte, Founder of Giving Tree Paper Co.
We are honored to share that Big Thought has been profiled in a recent article highlighting the transformative impact of our Creative Solutions program.
The feature tells the powerful story of Jose Manuel Garcia—known as “Bone”—a South Dallas native whose early encounters with the juvenile justice system could have defined his future. Instead, through creativity, mentorship, and opportunity, his story took a different path.
Referred to Big Thought following a juvenile sentence, Bone entered Creative Solutions and discovered that art could be more than expression—it could be healing, professional development, and a pathway forward. He gained real-world job experience, strengthened social-emotional skills, and built the confidence to pursue art as a career. Today, he has come full circle, returning to Big Thought as a mentor and teacher, guiding the next generation of young creatives.
The article also underscores why this work matters so deeply. Research shows that more than 75% of youth in the juvenile justice system have experienced traumatic victimization. Arts-based interventions provide critical space for processing emotion, building resilience, and developing a positive sense of identity. Studies further demonstrate that sustained arts engagement is associated with improved academic performance, reduced behavioral incidents, and lower rates of recidivism.
We are grateful to be recognized for this work and even more grateful for the young people, educators, and partners who make it possible every day.
