Volunteering With Young People: An Investment in What’s Possible

By Asia Johnson, Sr. Manager of Marketing & Communications at Big Thought

Asia is a strategic storyteller who is passionate about connecting Big Thought audiences to meaningful stories and opportunities that center youth.

At Big Thought, our work is rooted in partnership with young people—creating alongside them, not just for them. Volunteers are an important part of that work. They help shape relationships, support, and spaces that give young people room to explore, lead, and grow.

Whether they’re sharing time, expertise, or simply showing up with care, volunteers help expand what’s possible. They build confidence, open doors, and strengthen the sense of community young people need to thrive.

For Lela Bell Wesley, Sr. Director of Big Thought Institute, volunteering is deeply connected to both community and culture. “As a servant leader at Big Thought, I believe it is important to incorporate volunteering into our everyday work. There is nothing better than serving in the community and being a part of the village,” she shared.

That same spirit comes through in the words of Sean Walker, Program Manager of The Fellowship Initiative.

“Our village is ever growing, ever evolving, and everyone has a role to play,” he shared. “From families and partners to volunteers and staff, each act of support becomes part of something bigger for young people.”

Big Thought-hosted events like the Opportunity Exchange Summit bring that spirit to life, creating space for volunteers, partners, and young people to connect, learn, and lead together.

For Veena Hammers, a volunteer at the Opportunity Exchange Summit, the experience was a clear example of intentional community work in action. “Volunteering at the Opportunity Exchange Summit reinforced what meaningful community work can be,” Veena shared. “It wasn’t just an event; it was a genuine commitment to move things forward.”

That same sense of purpose is echoed by Ruth Jeremiah, also a volunteer at the Opportunity Exchange Summit. “Volunteering for an organization like Big Thought is so meaningful,” Ruth shared. “I love to support a mission that has the next generation in mind.”

And while Volunteer Month gives us a chance to recognize that commitment, the work of showing up for young people continues all year long. If you’ve been looking for a meaningful way to get involved, we invite you to join us in creating opportunities for young people to learn, lead, and thrive.
