Partner Spotlight: Smith Media Company

When Cordney Smith lost his job as an educator more than ten years ago, it marked the beginning of a new path rooted in creativity, entrepreneurship, and service.

“I started Smith Media Company out of necessity,” Smith shares. “I lost my job as an educator and felt working for self and owning my own was the best route. Ten years later, we are still here.”

Smith Media Company’s work stretches across DJing, photography, videography, photobooth services, and youth programming. What ties it all together is a deep commitment to creativity and community.

“The connection comes from my background as an educator and my love for music and performing. My team and I thrive off of seeing the excitement of our clients when we DJ for them whether at a wedding, corporate event, private party, school event, or house party. We look forward to creating memories our clients can relive. In addition, our youth agency initiative helps us create programming for youth to be leaders and continuous learners in a digital-first world.”

For Smith, introducing young people to creative activities like DJing and podcasting is about helping them see their own potential. “It’s important to introduce young people to these activities because they are the future. If we put these art forms in the forefront of their minds, they can be a beacon of light for future generations.”

One of the most rewarding parts of the journey? Watching students grow through creative experiences. “I’ve lost count over the years,” Smith says, reflecting on nearly a decade of partnership with Big Thought. “Every culminating event or showcase that we have at our camps or enrichment sites is the absolute best.”

Big Thought’s Senior Manager of Community Engagement, David Pedraza, shared his perspective on the value of this partnership:

Smith Media is one of those partners that puts youth first and jumps in where needed, adding value to everything Big Thought does – from Learning Hub podcast programming to setting the tone of our Turn Up events with his DJ services. Cordney is the kind of partner who shows up, runs alongside you, and does it all without complaint or expectation.

Through it all, the goal remains the same: that every young person who crosses paths with Smith Media Company walks away having discovered a creative spark within themselves.
