How Do We Hold Onto Hope in Uncertain Times? (And Help Youth Do the Same)

Change is a constant, and with it often comes uncertainty. As educators, nonprofit leaders, and community advocates, we are not only responsible for navigating these challenges ourselves but also for modeling resilience and hope for the young people we support. In a world that can feel overwhelming, how can we hold onto hope, and help our youth do the same?

1. Prioritize Connection and Community

One of the most powerful ways to cultivate hope is through connection. When we feel supported by our community, we’re more likely to believe in the possibility of a brighter future. Simple acts like checking in with a young person, encouraging them, and providing space for them to express their emotions can make a significant impact.

As adults, we can model this by seeking support from colleagues, peers, and mentors when we need encouragement ourselves, and by seeking out new connections. “Find places to connect with those that may speak a different language, be a different religion, or live a different lifestyle,” Lela Bell Wesley, Sr. Director of Big Thought Institute suggests.

2. Focus on Small, Meaningful Actions

Hope is built through action. “Think of ways to offer someone you don’t know a smile, a compliment, a thank you, something you do not need, or a small part of your time,” Lela suggests. Encourage youth to take small steps. When they see that their efforts contribute to positive change, whether in their own lives or their communities, hope becomes something tangible.

3. Notice Others and Extend Grace

“One experience that profoundly changed my own perspective was the loss of my son 19 years ago. In the midst of grief, I found hope in the people around me through their prayers, smiles, and love,” Lela shared. “That experience shifted the way I see others; I was reminded that we never truly know what someone else is going through. This understanding helped me extend more grace to those around me, and in turn, pass on a sense of hope and encouragement.”

As we navigate uncertain times, we can foster environments where youth feel valued, supported, and hopeful. Change will always be a part of life, but with strong relationships, intentional action, and empathy for others, we can help the next generation see challenges as opportunities for growth.
